Biography

Kevin Cahill, M.D., is part of the trauma team at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland. During his time in medical school and residency, Dr. Cahill was inspired seeing how surgical critical care physicians took ownership for a patient’s entire care, from the moment they entered the hospital.

“That ability to care for the whole patient is what inspired me to go into medicine in the first place,” he said.  “Working in surgical critical care allows me the privilege to provide comprehensive care for a wide range of the most acutely ill patients regardless of whether their condition is medical, surgical or both.”

Dr. Cahill finds it greatly rewarding to be able to provide the highest quality surgical and medical care possible to patients at some of the most challenging times.

“The entire field of trauma grew out of a recognition that trauma remains a leading cause of mortality and that overcoming this challenge would require a systemic response,” said Dr. Cahill.  “The creation of an overall trauma system with the highest standards for trauma prevention, pre-hospital care, trauma center care and post-hospitalization rehabilitation has been revolutionary in improving patient outcomes. In addition, the field of trauma has been greatly expanded by research in areas such as novel non-invasive/endovascular interventions, goal-directed hemostatic resuscitation of trauma-induced coagulopathy and more have allowed us to continue to reduce trauma related morbidity and mortality.”

Philosophy of Care

“My goal in patient care is to not simply treat symptoms or conditions, but to better understand each patient’s needs,” said Dr. Cahill. “I try to establish a collaborative relationship with the patient involving open, honest discussion to achieve the best possible outcomes in line with their own goals, needs and beliefs.”

Dr. Cahill hopes to foster an open and honest partnership with his patients where he can provide the most up-to-date information possible to allow them to make decisions in line with their own beliefs and goals.

The key to a strong surgical critical care program is the highest quality care that is delivered by a well-integrated, multi-disciplinary team dedicated to serving the patient first. “Patients should feel comfortable knowing that the entire health system will be working tirelessly on their behalf,” said Dr. Cahill.
