Biography

Benjamin Cox, D.O. is a fellowship-trained sports medicine orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the surgical and non-surgical care of bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscle injuries. He is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries, disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Dr. Cox chose the field of orthopedics because he has always enjoyed fixing things, working with his hands, and building relationships with others. Over the course of his career, he has cared for athletes from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, as well as numerous colleges and universities. Dr. Cox has served as the associate team physician for the Auburn University Tigers, and as the football team physician for Tuskegee University. He has also been involved in research pertaining to orthobiologic regenerative medicine, as well as the prevention of youth injuries in sports.

He completed his fellowship training at the Andrews Institute for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and trained under world-renowned surgeon James R. Andrews, M.D., one of the founding partners. “He taught me that the priorities in orthopedics and life really should be, number one your faith; number two your family; number three orthopedics; and number four should be having a good time,” he said. “That was probably the best year of training that I had. From a technical standpoint, I got to learn from some of the best surgeons in the world. From a patient standpoint, getting to take care of some phenomenal individuals and talented athletes.”

Philosophy of Care

“There’s obviously a huge amount of trust that you have to build with people in order to operate on them,” said Dr. Cox. “I get to meet so many different people, and we become very, very close very quickly. My goal is to create a welcoming environment for my patients and their family members.”

According to Dr. Cox, the most rewarding aspect of being a surgeon is getting to see patients succeed. “It’s extremely satisfying to help an athlete overcome an injury and watch them get back into action and seeing them do the thing they love to do in life again,” he said.
