The communities of Oscoda and Hale turned out to support the fight against cancer during the 13th Annual Oscoda Volley for a Cure fundraising game between Oscoda and Hale High Schools. A total of $18,221 was raised for the MyMichigan Medical Center Tawas Foundation Cancer Fund. The dollars will benefit patient care enhancements, education and direct patient assistance for urgent basic living expenses while seeking treatment through the MyMichigan Medical Center Tawas Infusion Room.
The annual game was initiated in 2011 by Laura Franklin in honor of her late mother, Diane Pippin, who passed away from breast cancer. To raise funds, Franklin and Coach Melissa Curley, along with the JV and Varsity volleyball players, solicit businesses in Tawas, Hale, Oscoda and surrounding areas to come together to fundraise for the rivalry game each year. Event dollars are raised through silent auction donations, bake and pink swag sale, cash donations and 50/50 drawing support. To date, Volley for a Cure has raised $125,000.
“Words simply can’t thank the event organizers and attendees enough for all they have done for cancer patients in our community,” said Michelle Bacarella, fund development director, MyMichigan Medical Center Tawas Foundation. “Your efforts have made a lasting difference in the lives of friends and neighbors that are battling cancer. I know Mrs. Pippin is proud of all that has been done in her name. We appreciate each and every one of you that have helped with this effort in any way.”
