Clay Shoot Raises Funds for Breast Health

The Annual Support Committee of MyMichigan Health Foundation recently hosted Clays for a Cause, a sporting clay shooting event that included 12 shooting stations, raffles, a 50/50 drawing and luncheon. The shoot raised funds for the installation of a new, dedicated ultrasound system for the Breast Health Suite at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. The fundraiser collected $7,120 that will be directed to the cost of the new piece of equipment.

Ten teams of up to four shooters each, including teams from Cheboygan, participated in the event which took place at the Alpena Sportsmen’s Club. Each team traversed the course having the opportunity to hit clay targets at different stations throughout the club’s property.

Lead sponsors for the event were Besser Company and Wolverine State Credit Union. Several other businesses sponsored the event including AssuredPartners, Alpena Power Company, Cliff Anschuetz Chevrolet, Huron Dist. Inc. and Huron Engineering and Surveying, Inc.

Ann Diamond, director, MyMichigan Health Foundation thanked the sponsors and participants, “Clays for a Cause is a unique event which raises funds for the Alpena Cancer Center while celebrating a well-loved pastime here in northern Michigan – clay shooting. We hold the event during the fall each year, helping to prepare hunters for small and large game season. It gives our participants a fun outing to support an important cause. We are so thankful that we have such a generous sporting community here in northeast Michigan. We are also very grateful to our many sponsors and participants, as well as the Sportsman’s Club and the Alpena Clay Busters for hosting the event.”

The winning team was Chuck Hein, Dave Hayka, Wayne Lewis and Tom Hein, all of Compass Land Surveying. Out of 200 targets, they broke 183. The second-place team from Omega Electric included Ryan Fairchild, Doug King, Meghan King and Dean Schmanski, who broke 156 of their 200 clays. Dave Hayka and Will Rensberry tied for the highest score of the day, each breaking an impressive 48 of 50 clays.

“Congratulations to our winners. It was a competitive year with the second, third and fourth team finishing at 156, 155 and 154, respectively,” said Diamond. “I believe a little competition can bring out the best in all of us, especially when the competition brings more awareness to a disease like breast cancer and assists in raising funds for an important piece of equipment that will help women throughout northeast Michigan.”
