Medical Center Celebrates 150 Years of Caring for the Saginaw Community

Invitation that says A Legacy of Healing with the MyMichigan logo.

MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw celebrates their 150 year anniversary.

A remarkable milestone is being recognized this week as MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw employees, providers, and volunteers celebrate the hospital’s 150th anniversary. This momentous occasion is an opportunity to reflect on the hospital’s past, celebrate current achievements, and look forward to a future filled with promise and potential.

The Medical Center is hosting a special 150th anniversary meal for staff on all shifts. A display has been created in the Medical Center featuring historical hospital artifacts that depict how healthcare has evolved throughout the decades. In addition, all staff will receive a commemorative gift to honor our heritage.

“Throughout the past century and a half, the Saginaw Medical Center has achieved a legacy of healing with extraordinary advancements in medicine,” said Lydia Watson, M.D., president and CEO, MyMichigan Health. “Their success and rich history is attributed to the dedication and expertise of the hospital’s founders, and the exceptional employees, health care providers, volunteers, and loyal donors, who have all shown a commitment to excellence that has helped the Medical Center in Saginaw become what it is today. We are honored to have them as members of the MyMichigan Health family.”

“Looking back at our history, a lot has changed since the 1870s when our founders began to provide health care to the area lumbermen,” said Shane Hunt, R.N., B.B.A., M.S.A., vice president of nursing, MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw, and leader with more than 30 years of experience at the Saginaw hospital. “Throughout the years, we have stepped up to meet challenges, witnessed great progress in providing care, and even contributed to some key medical advancements and research. Then and now, what is consistent are the people who are passionate about providing high-quality, safe medical care, and who go above and beyond to care for the communities we are privileged to serve.”

On Aug. 1, Ascension Michigan’s hospital, sites of care and related physician practices in Saginaw, Standish and Tawas joined MyMichigan Health.

“As we look ahead, MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw is excited about the future and the endless possibilities to come,” said Mike Erickson, president of MyMichigan Medical Centers Saginaw, Standish, Tawas and Towne Centre. “We will continue to build on the legacy Ascension St. Mary’s and those before them established and focus on strengthening access to care and services. The Medical Center and our employees will deepen their commitment to the communities served, working collaboratively to address health disparities, promote wellness for all and fulfill our purpose in Creating Healthy Communities – Together.”
