Patients Give Sault Ste. Marie Medical Center 5-Star Rating

Patients give high scores to MyMichigan Medical Center Sault Based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, the Medical Center in Sault Ste. Marie received a CMS 5-Star Rating for patient experience in receiving discharge information. The HCAHPS national, standardized survey asks hospital patients about their experience during a recent inpatient hospital stay. The survey was completed between October 2022 and September 2023.

“Discharge information is key to the communication between a patient and their care team and this five-star rating reflects our dedication to providing high-quality, safe and excellent care to our patients. Our physicians, employees and volunteers are committed to every patient and continually strive to exceed their expectations,” said Kevin Kalchik, president, MidMichigan Medical Center Sault. “Ultimately, this survey allows us to be more transparent with our community and we are grateful to our community in the trust they place in us to care for them and their loved ones in time of need.”

CMS rates hospitals from one to five stars, based on quality measures in five categories: mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. Scores reflect common conditions, such as heart attack and pneumonia, and the overall rating indicates how each hospital performs. These star ratings, published on Hospital Compare, are intended to provide patients with a simple way to compare hospitals. By publicly sharing quality data, CMS also spurs hospitals toward continuous quality improvement.

“Understanding a patient’s experience of their Medical Center care is key to improving our performance,” said Kalchik. “We are using the information from the HCAHPS survey to evaluate the care we provide at our Medical Center and find ways to ensure we are addressing all of our patients’ care needs.”
