Biography
Mohamed Akkad, M.D., is a medical oncologist and hematologist and medical director at MyMichigan Medical Oncology & Hematology in Alma. He is also a member of the comprehensive cancer care team at MyMichigan Health which includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialized surgeons, interventional radiologists, as well as breast and lung health navigators.
Dr. Akkad went into the field of medicine because of his fascination with the various dynamics of the human body and its physiology. “Being the son of a physician, I was influenced throughout my childhood by my father’s dedication toward the field of medicine,” he said. “Having a family member that was diagnosed with cancer and watching her battle it and win, inspired me to get into the field of hematology/oncology to help others in similar situations. As I continued with my studies, I got more involved in the area of research and my passion for medicine only grew stronger.”
According to Dr. Akkad, the advancements in diagnosis and treatment for prostate, breast and lung cancers are rapidly evolving. An example of this would be the use of immunotherapy to treat lung cancer, which involves using a patient’s own cells to attack the cancer cells versus administering chemotherapy.
Philosophy of Care
“First and foremost, I want my patients to be comfortable in the environment that they’re in,” said Dr. Akkad. “The diagnosis of cancer is very stressful and patients require a lot of emotional and social support.”
Dr. Akkad feels it is important to make sure his patients fully understand their diagnosis, their plan of care and the expectations that go along with it. “I believe in being up front with my patient’s and sharing everything I know,” he said. “I also believe it is important to make sure that their family members have a clear understanding of this as well.”
