Biography
Mohamed Elgamal, M.D., a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology and American College of Surgeons, is a member of the comprehensive cancer care team at MyMichigan Health. This team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialized oncology surgeons, interventional radiologists, genetic counselors, as well as breast and lung health navigators.
Philosophy of Care
“A cancer diagnosis can derail the patient’s life in many ways,” said Dr. Elgamal. “I don’t want to simply treat the cancer; I want to minimize its impact on the patient.” He strives to give patients the longest as well as best quality of life they can possibly have while minimizing the disruption the treatment requires.
When asked about the most satisfying aspects of his work, Dr. Elgamal shared that he wants to be able to challenge a life threatening disease process and stop it, turning it into a bump in the road rather than the end of it.
“Each patient is different so I want to partner with them in achieving the patient’s goals from the treatment,” said Dr. Elgamal. “This can only be done through understanding the patient’s point of view and how the disease process is impacting them. I try to walk with the patient through their treatment journey rather than force on them a path to follow.”
Special Interests and Procedures
As an oncology surgeon, Dr. Elgamal is dedicated to delivering the highest quality surgical care for cancer patients. He is interested in hepatobiliary (liver/gallbladder), stomach and gastrointestinal minimally invasive surgeries including liver resections, pancreatectomy, gastrectomy, colon resections and anti-reflux procedures. In addition, Dr. Elgamal does breast surgery including treatment of benign and malignant breast disease and sentinel node biopsies.
“The advancement of minimally invasive surgery and laparoscopy have had a great impact on surgery versus the traditional open surgeries,” said Dr. Elgamal. “Minimally invasive surgeries lessen the impact of large scars, chronic pain and altered anatomy, giving the patients a feeling that their body is still intact.”
Dr. Elgamal is an avid DIYer and does many home improvement projects. He also is very interested in technology and likes to do software development. He and his wife have three children.
