Biography
Paul Lavin, M.D., specializes in neurohospitalist medicine. He provides inpatient care for patients who are hospitalized with neurologic conditions at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland. This program offers a more thorough and expert neurological evaluation, faster planning and treatment so patients can return home sooner and better coordination with their outpatient neurologist for ongoing care.
Philosophy of Care
“I was attracted to neurology by the amazing connection between the art and science of medicine. Every patient has a unique presentation to their neurologic issues and requires the highest level of attention to detail.”
“I seek first to compassionately understand a patient before arriving to any conclusions. Having a neurologic condition can be intimidating and anxiety-provoking. Building comfort and rapport leads to a better relationship with my patients. My best mentors take excellent histories and physical exams to fully understand a patient and their condition. This art of bedside approach brings out the best medical treatment.”
“I build my relationship with patients on the highest level of trust and understanding. For many patients, fully expressing or detailing their neurologic issues can be challenging. I try to listen with patience and empathy and then collaborate to find the best treatment options.”
“I love the joy that patients express when I can reassure them about their condition and seeing their condition improve with the right treatment.”
“I believe patients appreciate my calm demeanor and bedside manner. I trained at one of the highest volume stroke centers in the country in Miami. My fellowship training in epilepsy exposed me to additional expertise in treating refractory seizures, which prepared me well to conduct and read electroencephalograms (EEGs).”
We are always discovering exciting new treatments for conditions that were previously untreatable. For ischemic strokes, we can now perform mechanical thrombectomy within 24 hours of acute symptoms, which helps save lives and prevent severe disability. For epilepsy, we now have Neuropace, a device implanted in the brain that can detect and record seizures and potentially treat them.”
“During my free time, I love enjoying the great Michigan outdoors through bike riding or exploring amazing restaurants.”
