Philosophy of Care
Growing up an avid surfer in California, Dr. Hamel developed an interest in sun protection and skin cancer. “I value the ability to work with patients of all ages to help them keep their skin healthy over their lifetime,” said Dr. Hamel.
Dr. Hamel’s goal is to provide the best care possible for each patient and to treat them as he would his own family. He wants patients to have the information and tools necessary to make well-informed decisions.
“I take the time to listen to each patient and prioritize safety and effectiveness,” said Dr. Hamel. “The surgery is often in a cosmetically sensitive area which may cause the patient additional anxiety. I strive to make their experience as comfortable as possible.”
Dr. Hamel shared that one of the most satisfying aspects of his work is coordinating treatments and promoting healthy habits to prevent additional cancers from developing. “Since procedures are done under local anesthesia, I can talk with my patients and get to know them,” added Dr. Hamel.
Special Interests and Procedures
As a Mohs surgeon, Dr. Hamel has specialized training and expertise in treating skin cancers. Mohs surgery is the gold standard for many skin cancers as it provides the highest possible cure rate while ensuring the maximum preservation of normal skin. Mohs surgery is a delicate procedure where the Mohs surgeon removes the skin cancer, checking the margin at each stage to confirm elimination of the tumor while minimizing the removal of surrounding healthy skin. After the skin cancer is removed, the wound is repaired with utmost attention to functional and cosmetic outcome.
Dr. Hamel has published articles in national and international journals and stays current with new techniques and advances in the Mohs surgery field.
In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Hamel holds master’s degrees in clarinet performance and music theory from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Musical Arts in clarinet performance from Michigan State University. He appreciates the artistry in both music and surgery.
Dr. Hamel enjoys cross-country skiing, cycling, surfing and music. He and his wife, Leslie, have two children.
