Profile

Biography

J. T Pinney, M.D., is board certified in both family medicine and sports medicine. He provides sports injury evaluation, treatment and preventive care to athletes of all levels and ages at MyMichigan Health’s WellSport program.

Dr. Pinney has practiced in sports medicine for more than 20 years. At WellSport, Dr. Pinney provides easy access for musculoskeletal problems, sprains, strains and fractures, and other sports-related conditions, including heart disease, concussion, and nutritional needs.

Dr. Pinney is the medical director of WellSport. He is also a team physician for the Great Lakes Loons baseball team and local area high school teams.

“Sports medicine is a mindset that involves getting athletes of all ages and skill levels back in the game as safely, quickly and effectively as we can,” Dr. Pinney said. “There are a lot of resources, backed by more and more information that can move us toward that goal. As athletes’ first responding physician to a sports injury or need I can help coordinate the sports injury evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation that will help patients return to sport effectively.”

Philosophy of Care

“Wouldn’t you take a medicine that could give you wonderful benefits, with few or no side effects - exercise is that medicine,” he said. “It helps preserve health, and it’s one of our most powerful remedies for a whole range of medical conditions.”

He urges his own patients to be physically active to fight high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, depression, obesity and other conditions and encourages rehabilitation and exercise for recovery from many types of sports related injuries.

Dr. Pinney notes that physicians are asking more people to use exercise in the process of their treatment, and studies show that people are doing so. “I want to help them continue receiving the benefits of fitness by enabling them to get back to their sport or activity if they become injured or ill,” he said.

Dr. Pinney follows his own prescription for an active life. He is a runner and enjoys skiing, biking, weight lifting and Jimmy Buffet. He and his wife, Lydia, live in Midland.
