Biography
John V. Murphy, D.O., is an orthopedic surgeon with MyMichigan Health. Dr. Murphy is in practice with his sister, Orthopedic Surgeon Denise M. Stadelmaier, D.O., and sees patients in Midland and Gladwin.
Dr. Murphy completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, where he was selected to serve as chief resident in his final year. During his residency, Dr. Murphy completed training in sports medicine and total joint arthroplasty, including sports-related injuries and joint replacements. He completed additional training in hand surgery at Port Huron Hospital; trauma surgery at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas; and pediatric orthopedics at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.
Dr. Murphy serves as the musculoskeletal service line chief and is responsible for ensuring the highest quality and consistency of orthopedic and rehabilitation care at MyMichigan.
Philosophy of Care
As a result of four successful years playing both football and baseball at The Citadel, and after obtaining his undergraduate degree in business, Dr. Murphy was recruited to play both professional baseball and football. For seven years, Dr. Murphy played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals before entering the medical field in 1992.
“Playing professional baseball was a dream come true, yet not a career that could last a lifetime,” acknowledges Dr. Murphy. “Like most athletes, I experienced injuries during my career. As a result, I realized how valuable the right care is in order to recuperate as fully as possible. Orthopedic medicine seemed a logical next step.”
Special Interests and Procedures
Dr. Murphy has a special interest in conditions of the musculoskeletal system, sports-related injuries and joint replacements. Some of his special procedures include anterior approach hip replacement, outpatient knee replacement, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and hip resurfacing.
He also serves as the orthopedics team physician with the Great Lakes Loons baseball team in Midland.
Dr. Murphy is married to Christina Murphy, D.O., who is a gastroenterologist with Gastroeneterology/Hepatology Associates of MyMichigan in Midland.
