Biography
Shane Martin, D.O., is a general surgeon with specialized training in the evaluation and management of trauma patients. As a general surgeon he specializes in all types of laparoscopic and open surgery, such as procedures to remove gallbladders, repair hernias and treat conditions involving the gastrointestinal tract.
“My initial interest in medicine came from having multiple women in my family working in the field of nursing,” said Martin. “I wanted to be a doctor since the age of 10 and knew I wanted to focus on the specialty of surgery relatively early on as well. My specific interest in general surgery began in medical school. I like the overall variety of care general surgery provides, as well as the unique pathology of each case and the different disease types I can impact. I also find it very rewarding to have the ability to help patients in a relatively short period of time.”
Dr. Martin has a personal interest in screening colonoscopy, as well as minimally invasive surgery.
Philosophy of Care
“I believe health care in general is a team endeavor and there is no one person on the team who is more important than another,” said Martin. “To provide the most effective care, we must all work collaboratively together with the patient being a very important and active member of the team. My role is to provide information and education to my patients so that they can make informed decisions about their overall care. My approach is patient-centered and I speak to and treat each one of my patients as if they were a member of my own family. I try to ask myself on every case ‘how would my wife or child want to be treated’ and this helps me organize my thoughts and my approach to care.”
“Much of my philosophy of caring for others was formed during my twenty years as a wrestler,” he added. “Wrestling not only taught me how to properly prepare for a challenge, it also provided me with determination, perseverance, a strong work ethic and a heightened attention to detail.”
