It is the responsibility of the student to be familiar with any medication that they will be administering.
Prior to medication administration:
- All staff as well as students will perform the five rights prior to administration of any medication.
- The right drug
- The right dose
- The right route
- The right time
- The right patient
Administration of any medication MUST NEVER be completed without direct observation and co-signature by licensed staff or your instructor.
Administering medications:
- All medications must be labeled.
- Always check the patient’s armband with their name and date of birth against the medication administration record.
- Always utilize 2 patient identifiers, ask the patient to state their name and date of birth.
- Open all medications at the bedside; NOT prior to entering the room.
- Administer medication as scheduled, within 60 minutes of designated time.
- No medications are allowed to be stored at the bedside. This includes inhalers unless there is a physician order to do so.
