Surgical Oncology
Surgical oncology focuses on surgery to diagnose, stage and treat cancer. Surgical oncology teams provide care early in a cancer diagnosis to biopsy or remove a tumor. Surgery also helps providers understand how advanced someone’s condition may be by looking at the size of the tumor and determine if the cancer has spread to other areas. If a patient is at high risk of developing cancer, a surgical oncologist can remove body tissue that may become cancerous as well as provide relief of symptoms from advanced cancer.
Your provider will discuss with you if surgery is part of your cancer treatment plan. Some factors include the type of cancer, size, location, grade and stage of the tumor, as well as general health factors such as your age, physical fitness and any coexisting medical conditions you may have.
