BOTOX Treatment for Urinary
Incontinence, Frequency or Urgency

Injections of Botulinum Toxin type A, commonly known as BOTOX®, for treatment of urinary incontinence, are an option for treatment of urinary incontinence or problems with urinary frequency or urgency. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, this procedure offers a new treatment option for adults with neurologic conditions such as spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis (MS) or for whom medications are not appropriate or effective.

How the Treatment Works

Conditions such as MS or spinal cord injuries can cause a problem with the nerve response between the brain and urinary tract. This results in involuntary contractions by the bladder muscles, which can cause urine leakage. Using a cystoscope (a thin tube with an optical lens on the end that is inserted into the bladder through the urethra), BOTOX is injected across the bladder muscle, preventing the contractions that can cause incontinence. 

Proven Effective for Up to 10 Months

BOTOX injections are administered as an outpatient procedure. A single procedure may significantly reduce the number of leakage episodes for up to 10 months.

As with all medications, BOTOX can cause serious side effects in some people. Some of these side effects include allergic reaction; problems swallowing, speaking or breathing; spread of toxin effects; or autonomic dysreflexia (a severe reaction of the involuntary nervous system).
