How Often to Nurse Your Baby

  • If you are planning to breast feed, it is important to start as soon as possible.
  • Baby should be nursed on demand.
  • In the first 24 hours, baby may be sleepy and need to be awakened every two to three hours during the day and usually twice or more during the night.
  • Your baby will need to nurse well two times before you are discharged from the hospital.
  • After 48 hours, eight to 12 nursings in 24 hours are expected.
  • It is common for baby to cluster feed (have closely grouped feedings) prior to falling asleep for the night.
