Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative

Your neurosurgeon is a member of the Michigan Spine Surgery Improvement Collaborative, or MSSIC for short. MSSIC is a statewide collaboration comprised of surgeons and hospitals all working together to improve the quality of care and outcomes for you and other patients in Michigan undergoing spine surgery.

How does this affect me?

As part of the MSSIC program MyMichigan Health will track your progress over time to see how you are doing. All patients who are having cervical or lumbar surgery will complete a baseline health status questionnaire before surgery, and then follow up questionnaires at 3, 12, and 24 months after surgery.

How do I complete the questionnaire?

There are three ways to complete the questionnaire. Our MSSIC Clinical Data Abstractor nurse will reach out to you via phone to set your preferences once your surgery has been scheduled. Follow-up questionnaires can be completed 1) over the phone, 2) on a website using a computer, tablet or cell phone, or 3) the questionnaires can be mailed to your home address.

What happens to this information?

The MSSIC data is kept strictly confidential and uploaded into a secure registry. The MSSIC registry is intentionally designed to use a limited data set which includes the patient’s city, zip code, date of birth, dates of service; no other patient identifiers are entered. The purpose of this registry is to gather clinical data from a large group of people throughout the state who are having the same medical procedure. Surgeons who are participating in MSSIC will use this information to learn from each other about which approaches to surgery are most effective, offering the best possible patient outcomes and fewest complications.
