Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy programs at MyMichigan provide opportunity to improve quality of life through exercise in warm water. Aquatic therapy allows people to experience forms of treatment that are not possible on dry land.
Some of the conditions that benefit from aquatic therapy include:
- Acute and chronic pain
- Amputation
- Arthritis
- Back problems
- Cerebral palsy
- Diabetes
- Fibromyalgia
- Head injuries
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Shoulder, hip or knee problems
- Spinal-cord injuries
- Stroke
Types of Aquatic Therapy Programs
Outpatient - Aquatic therapy is provided in one-on-one sessions. The program has specific goals that are designed to achieve the best results possible. No swimming skills are required, but you will need a physician's order.
Transitional - Patients who are independent in their exercise program but want to continue using the therapy pool should consider MyMichigan's transitional program. Staff will be present to provide supervision. There is a modest fee for transitional programs.
Costs, Insurance and Referrals
Individual aquatic therapy sessions can be paid for by insurance or through private funds. If you have questions about coverage, your insurance carrier or your employer's benefits department is the best source of information.
To begin individual aquatic therapy sessions, ask your doctor for a referral.
Transitional aquatic therapy and classes typically are not covered by insurance, and do not require physician referral.
