Holter Monitor
This test records the electrical activity of your heart for 24 hours. After wiping your chest with alcohol pads, electrodes (small, adhesive patches) will be applied to your chest and connected to a battery-operated heart monitor. The monitor records your heart beat for 24 hours and is worn in a pouch, either over your shoulder or around your waist.
During the 24-hour period you may engage in normal activities with the exception of bathing. A sponge bath is acceptable if needed. After 24 hours have passed, you will return and the monitor will be removed.
Time:
20 to 30 minutes in the Cardiovascular Department
Preparation:
- Wear loose clothing, if you wish, to conceal the monitor
- Avoid the use of creams and lotions on the chest area
- There are no diet restrictions
- Please bring a list of medications
If you have questions about preparing for this test, call your doctor or MyMichigan's Cardiovascular Department at (989) 839-3570.
