Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)

This safe test evaluates the nerve function in your arms and/or legs to detect damage and/or diseases of the nerves. For this test, you will be lying down and electrodes will be placed on the surface of the skin. A small electrical current is applied to the skin overlying the nerve to be tested. Tiny electrical signals are recorded along the pathway of the nerves selected. This test may cause some varying levels of discomfort, depending on the strength of the electrical stimulation required. This test is performed and interpreted by a neurologist.

Time:

Approximately 15 minutes per extremity.

Preparation:

  • You must bathe on the day of your test.
  • Use no oils or lotions after bathing.
  • Continue normal diet and medications.
  • Bring a list of your medications you are taking.

Your Results:

All neurodiagnostic test results will be interpreted by a neurologist, and results will be sent to your physician. Your physician is responsible for communicating your results to you and helping you understand what they mean. If you have any questions about your test results, please call your doctor.

If you have a MyChart account, we will also send your test results to your account. If you need help accessing your test results in MyChart or would like to request a paper copy, please call MyMichigan's Health Information Department at (989) 839-3319.
