Peripheral Ultrasound (Venous or Arterial)
This test is performed to evaluate the veins or arteries in either the upper or lower extremities. This safe and painless procedure uses high frequency sound waves which are transmitted to the vessels through a hand-held transducer. The sound waves are then translated to a picture on a screen so the technologist can view the vessels in question and look for abnormalities and/or structural defects. The technologist will videotape the study for later diagnosis by the interpreting physician.
For this procedure you will be lying on your back and/or stomach, depending on the vessels that are being viewed. Gel will be applied to your skin, one area at a time, and the transducer will be moved around the area to view the veins from different angles.
Time:
1 hour in the Cardiovascular Department
Preparation:
- Wear clothing that is easy to remove.
- There are no diet restrictions.
- Please bring a list of medications.
