MyMichigan Medical Center Midland is designated as a Level II Trauma Center (verification from the American College of Surgeons and the State of Michigan), MyMichigan Medical Center Alma, MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena, and MyMichigan Medical Center Sault are designated as a Level III Trauma Center (verification from the State of Michigan) and MyMichigan Medical Center Clare is designated as a Level IV Trauma Center (verification from the State of Michigan).
Understanding Levels of Care
Level II - The trauma team at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland is able to provide comprehensive trauma care for injured adult patients. This includes:
- 24-hour immediate coverage by trauma surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians, medical and surgical intensivists, and anesthesiologists, as well as a wide variety of other surgical and medical services.
- Tertiary care needs may be referred to a Level 1 Trauma Center.
- Provides trauma prevention and continuing education programs for staff.
- Incorporates a comprehensive quality assessment program.
- Offers continued education of the nursing and allied health personnel or the trauma team.
- Involved with prevention efforts and must have an active outreach program for its referring communities.
Level III - The trauma team at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena and MyMichigan Medical Center Alma can provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, and stabilization of injured adult patients. This includes:
- 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and the prompt availability of general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons and anesthesiologists.
- Incorporates a comprehensive quality assessment program.
- Has developed transfer agreements for patients requiring more comprehensive care at a Level I or Level II Trauma Center.
- Provides back-up care for rural and community hospitals.
- Offers continued education of the nursing and allied health personnel or the trauma team.
- Involved with prevention efforts and must have an active outreach program for its referring communities.
Level IV - The trauma teams at MyMichigan Medical Center Clare and MyMichigan Medical Center Sault can stabilize seriously injured patients who need to be transferred to larger trauma centers. This includes:
- 24-hour emergency coverage by a provider who has Advanced Trauma Life Support certification.
What we Do
Trauma is the leading cause of death in people ages 1 – 44 in the United States, and it accounts for 47 percent of all deaths in this age group. It’s our goal to improve the outcomes for patients who are traumatically injured, as well as reducing the incidence and severity of the injury.
What to Expect
At MyMichigan Medical Center Midland, trauma patients are assured rapid treatment via our trauma activation system, which guarantees that the trauma team, including an attending trauma surgeon, is at the Emergency Department bedside within 15 minutes of arrival for severely injured patients. Operating room services are available 24 hours a day featuring a dedicated trauma call team and in-house anesthesia coverage.
MyMichigan Medical Center Midland also has a Neuro/Trauma ICU staffed with nurses who are specially trained to care for the needs of the trauma patient. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutritional services and case management work closely with the trauma team to maximize patient outcomes with a goal of returning patients to their pre-injury state of health.
