Biography
University of Michigan Neurologist Kara Wyant, M.D., specializes in evaluating and treating movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, dystonia and essential tremor. She sees patients in Midland and Ann Arbor.
Philosophy of Care
“The brain is the most fascinating organ!” said Dr. Wyant. “Because of my mathematics background, the analytical challenge of working on this highly organized system is what initially drew me to neurology; but it is my interactions with my patients that have kept me inspired and excited about the field.”
“The time I spend interacting with patients is the best part of my job. When someone has a problem moving – too little or too much – the only way to establish the diagnosis is by taking time with them. I listen to them tell their story, voice their concerns, and get to know them. This allows me to understand how the tremor or other movements affect their life, so that I can better counsel them about the diagnosis and treatment options most appropriate for their situation. Through this process, I hope to create a caring and compassionate relationship that will last the duration of their disease.”
“Being diagnosed with a neurologic disease can often be overwhelming and scary. I believe that education is very important, because knowledge brings power. My goal is to help patients understand their disease and learn how to manage their symptoms, so that they can regain control. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach when treating patients with movement disorders, often involving social work, physical and occupational therapy, speech language pathology, psychology and psychiatry into their care.
Patients are also encouraged to take an active role by participating in support groups, research, and promoting awareness of their illness, as these activities can lead to tremendous improvement in quality of life.”
Dr. Wyant will be working closely with Neurosurgeon Mark Jones, M.D., to evaluate patients who may be good candidates for deep brain stimulation surgery (DBS). This is a surgical treatment option for patients with essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease and dystonia.
Dr. Wyant has a music degree and plays the flute. She enjoys attending the symphony, theatre, and other musical events. She also likes camping, hiking and biking with her family, including her husband, Joshua, and her sons, Ryker and Leyton.
