Biography

Scott Maurer, M.D., is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan. He provides specialized pediatric cardiology care to infants, children and young adults, and will see adults who have a history of congenital heart defects. Dr. Maurer also performs fetal echocardiography to detect cardiac defects while in utero. He also enjoys teaching pediatric cardiology to providers of all levels. Dr. Maurer currently holds several pediatric cardiology specialty clinics in northern Michigan, including one in Alpena at MyMichigan Medical Center.

As a pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Maurer specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and management of heart conditions in infants and children. This includes the management of structural congenital heart defects and electrical heart disorders (pediatric arrhythmia). He also evaluates suspicious cardiac symptoms or findings such as heart murmurs, chest pain, fainting or exercise-associated cardiac symptoms. When heart surgery is required, he works closely with interventional specialists and pediatric heart surgeons and at the University of Michigan to determine the best treatments and interventions. Dr. Maurer also works closely with primary care pediatricians to provide coordinated and comprehensive care.

Dr. Maurer grew up in a small town in northern Michigan. He graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1986 and then spent two years studying biochemistry at George Washington University. He joined the U.S. Navy in conjunction with medical school and then spent eight and a half years as a general pediatrician. “While still in the Navy, I trained in pediatric cardiology and served as a staff pediatric cardiologist for another eight and a half years at the San Diego Naval Hospital,” he said.

“Highlights of my Navy career included a tour of duty overseas in Okinawa, Japan. I was also attached as a medical officer taking care of active duty sailors while assigned to the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard out of San Diego. I retired from the military after 20 plus years of service and spent several years practicing at Wake Forest University, before returning to Michigan in 2015.”

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Maurer is grateful to have the opportunity to work at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital which is consistently ranked among the best Pediatric Cardiology programs in USA. “I enjoy working with children of all ages,” he said. “I want every child to be as normal as possible. My goal is to help each child achieve their best possible function, maximize their ability to participate in whatever activities they choose, and to provide the best quality of life possible.”

Special Interests and Procedures

Dr. Maurer has specialized training in general outpatient pediatric cardiology. He also holds a special interest in fetal echocardiography and fetal cardiology and enjoys teaching opportunities. He lives with his wife and youngest daughter in Ellsworth and he and his wife have five daughters and eight grandchildren.
