Profile

Biography

Gregory Strauther, M.D., is a member of the trauma team at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland, offering expertise in the evaluation and management of trauma patients, as well as a broad range of surgical diagnoses.

Dr. Strauther’s interest in surgery, particularly trauma surgery and critical care, dates back to his junior rotation in medical school. “I did that rotation at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, which is a large, urban level 1 trauma center,” he said. I was attracted to the ability to heal directly with my hands, and to the prospect of being able to save a life hanging in the balance, through the work of my hands.”

Aside from patient interaction, the most satisfying aspect of Dr. Strauther’s work is the variety of patients and illnesses that he encounters in surgery and in trauma and critical care. “I like the challenges that come with taking care of critically injured and critically ill patients,” he said.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Strauther believes care is comprehensive and should consider every aspect of human need.

“Throughout my career, I have preferred to practice in community hospitals because I think it allows for both a high level of medical care as well as a more personal doctor/patient relationship,” he said. “I like the idea of having time not just to inform my patients, but to get to know them.”

In the nearly 20 years that Dr. Strauther has been in practice, he’s practiced privately in a traditional office-based practice, as a hospital-based surgeon, and has done routine general surgical procedures and practiced as a surgeon caring primarily for critically injured and critically ill trauma patients. “I think this has given me a breath of experience that is less common either among those practicing general surgery exclusively, or trauma surgery exclusively,” he said.

Special Interests and Procedures

Dr. Strauther has a special interest in complex hernia repairs, surgical nutrition and ventilator management.

He and his wife, Tawanna, have five children. His hobbies include photography, target shooting and landscaping.
