Philosophy of Care
“Learning about the brain has always fascinated me, and I also wanted to be involved in surgery,” said Stephanie. “The brain is so unpredictable; there is a lot of gray area when it comes to neuro. We continue to learn new things every day that can affect the brain, the nerves, and the spinal cord. Not one treatment option fits the same with every person.” “My philosophy is to treat my patients like family members, to show compassion and empathy and to provide holistic care. Patients are more than their diagnosis or their surgery.” “I want my patients to have a trusting, open relationship with me. I want them to know I am here for them and will fight their fight with them every step of the way.” “People are scared to be in the hospital. Spending time with them, talking to them and using terms they understand goes a long way. Going that extra mile is important to me.” “I went into nursing to care for patients and help them throughout all aspects of life. My experience as a neuro trauma ICU nurse and working in neurosurgery has helped me become a better advocate. I have a positive attitude, and I’m willing to work hard and go above and beyond.” “Helping family members get through difficult times is another aspect I take pride in. I have been on the side where tough decisions have to be made, and if I can help make those decisions easier then I know I did my job.” “Neurosurgery continues to advance. One example is the ability to do awake cranial surgeries, which is beyond fascinating. I have been lucky to be part of that experience, which not everyone gets the opportunity to do. The brain is simultaneously so unpredictable and yet so precise that I love being part of cranial procedures.” “During my free time, I enjoy reading, spending time with friends and family and spending time with my dogs. My husband, James, and I don’t have any children, but we have four precious dogs that are our world. I also love learning about history, specifically British and Scottish history.”
