Biography

Opesanmi Esan, M.D., is a board-certified electrophysiologist with MyMichigan Health and is a member of the comprehensive heart and vascular team. This team includes cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, as well as vascular, thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons. As an electrophysiologist, Dr. Esan treats patients with atrial fibrillation and other electrical heart rhythm disorders.

His clinical interests focus on the treatment of atrial fibrillation with ablation. According to Dr. Esan, “Ablation techniques have totally changed the landscape of how arrhythmias are treated. While many forms of cardiac arrhythmias have become readily curable by ablation techniques, treatment for atrial fibrillation has been more challenging. This is primarily because the electrical disruptions associated with atrial fibrillation are much more extensive.”

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Esan was drawn to electrophysiology during his first year in residency. He did a rotation in electrophysiology and, from the moment he stepped foot into the EP lab, he became fascinated with this aspect of cardiovascular medicine.

“I work hard to create a partnership with my patients and to make sure that they know they are an important part of the care team,” Dr. Esan said. “Together we have a vested interest in their care and the common goal of getting them better. I want my patients to know that they come first and that they have someone who wants to help them and cares about them. We are a team and I’m simply here to help facilitate their treatment.”

Special Interests and Procedures

Dr. Esan specializes in ablation techniques, treatment of atrial fibrillation, the implantation of cardiac defibrillator devices and cardiac resynchronization therapy. He also enjoys pharmaceutical and procedural clinical research and has been involved in numerous clinical trials. Additionally, Dr. Esan co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and other publications.

Dr. Esan’s wife, Uzoamaka, is also a physician and practices in the specialty of family medicine. In his free time, he loves spending time with his family and teaching his four-year-old son how to play baseball. He also enjoys mountain biking, tennis and golf, as well as following his favorite baseball team, the New York Mets.
