Biography

Family Medicine Physician Uzoamaka Anne Esan, M.D., treats patients of all ages. She has a special interest in women’s health and pediatrics.

Dr. Esan chose her specialty for the broad spectrum it offers. “The wonderful thing about family medicine is the potential for getting to know the whole family from grandparents on down,” she said. “I enjoy treating patients in a range of ages and helping them with a variety of health conditions.”

Medicine is a family affair for Dr. Esan. “Both of my parents and two of my three siblings became physicians,” she said. “So while I was growing up there was a lot of influence in that direction.” In addition, she is married to Opesanmi Esan, M.D., a cardiologist and electrophysiologist with MyMichigan Medical Group.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Esan is committed to helping her patients reach their best state of health because she believes good health is the basis of a good life. “With good health comes a good spirit,” she said, paraphrasing a Nigerian adage.

“Physical health affects the mind and spirit as well as the body. Taking care of yourself, and working hand-in-hand with your doctor, are the basic steps to achieving good health.”

She wants patients to work with her as partners. “I tell patients ‘Your health is in your hands,’” Dr. Esan said. “I know I cannot coerce people to make good choices but I can persuade. I explain everything, including the risks and benefits, and let them choose.”

Her favorite part of family medicine is counseling patients on how to live better, healthier lives. “I share information, give them resources and teach them how to manage their health,” Dr. Esan said. “I make sure I am always available to my patients.”

Dr. Esan believes in being open and approachable. “I try to create a friendly atmosphere so patients are encouraged to come see me and talk with me,” she said. “I enjoy sitting and listening to my patients. I love learning about their lives and their families. I want them to be able to talk to me anytime about anything.”

Dr. Esan and her husband, who have a young son, appreciate the relaxed atmosphere of Midland and the friendly residents. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, soccer, tennis and golf.
