Biography

Radwan Alkiek, M.D, is an invasive cardiologist with MyMichigan Health and is a member of the comprehensive heart and vascular team. This team includes cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, as well as vascular, thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons.

According to Dr. Alkiek, he has always been a math and science guy and he truly enjoys the intricate, technical and electrophysiology aspects of the heart.

“The heart is one of the most important organs in the entire body,” said Dr. Alkiek. “If the heart ever ceases to pump blood, the body begins to shut down and after a very short period of time will die.”

Beyond caring for patients, Dr. Alkiek enjoys training medical students. In addition to teaching at Louisiana State University, he also served as an assistant professor at the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University and as a clinical associate professor at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Philosophy of Care

“I treat my patients with great compassion,” said Dr. Alkiek. “I want them to know that they are important to me and that I truly care about their well-being. I make sure that they know that I’m accessible to them and that I will take time to get to know them and fully understand their circumstances before prescribing treatment.”

When treating heart disease, Dr. Alkiek emphasized that he looks beyond just the physical aspects. “When treating a patient, I keep in mind their psychosocial and behavioral factors,” he added. A person’s mood, whether depression, anxiety, anger or stress, can significantly affect the development and progression of their disease. In fact, over the years I’ve treated many patients who were suffering from broken heart syndrome brought on by the loss of a loved one or other source of severe stress.”

Special Interests and Procedures

Dr. Alkiek holds a special interest in coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmia. He specializes in diagnostic heart catheterizations, nuclear cardiology, coronary arteriography, calcium scoring and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). He has also been involved in a variety of research journals and clinical abstracts.

In his free time, Dr. Alkiek enjoys spending time running, exercising at the gym, reading and spending time with his family. He and his wife have four children, two of which have already graduated college, one who is currently attending college and one who is in high school.
