Biography
Sarah E. Diaz, D.O., is a colon and rectal surgeon and a member of the comprehensive cancer care team at MyMichigan Health. This team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialized surgeons, interventional radiologists, as well as nurse navigators.
As a colon and rectal surgeon, Dr. Diaz specializes in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of disorders and diseases of the intestinal tract, colon and rectum, pelvic floor, anal canal and perianal area.
“The most satisfying aspect of my work is when patients reach the end of their surgical journey and they are free from cancer or pain,” said Dr. Diaz.
Philosophy of Care
“People are the reason I became a provider,” said Dr. Diaz. “Whether I’m working with a patient newly diagnosed with cancer or performing a colonoscopy, the patients are grateful and amazing to work with.”
According to Dr. Diaz, patients have the best outcomes when they fully understand their disease process and the plan for their treatment. She is conservative in her approaches and tries to offer the minimally invasive option for her patients.
“I will foster a relationship with my patients so they feel empowered, comfortable and in control of their healthcare,” she added.
Special Interests and Procedures
Dr. Diaz has extensive training in robotic abdominal and pelvic surgery and has a special interest in colon and rectal cancer as well as pelvic floor surgery for rectal prolapse.
She believes robotic surgery has allowed colorectal surgeons to perform complex procedures using small incisions which means the patient may have less pain, quicker recoveries and fewer post-surgery complications.
Dr. Diaz is an avid equestrian and has competed in the sport of dressage for most of her life with her first “husband” Bomber, a 24 year old Appaloosa thoroughbred. She enjoys trail running, mountain biking and seeking out adventures. Dr. Diaz currently serves as a flight surgeon in the Air National Guard. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Daniel and their three children.
