Biography
Brian Hanna, D.O., is a general surgeon with advanced training in surgical treatment of conditions and diseases of the esophagus, gallbladder, large and small bowel, thyroid, and stomach. He also treats hernias and diseases involving the skin, breast, and soft tissue.
When asked why he chose to be a general surgeon, Dr. Hanna replied, “I read the book, ‘The Making of a Surgeon,’ in sixth grade and I knew that was the path I was called to take.”
His family practitioner fostered his interest and made arrangements for him, while in high school, to observe surgeries. “I find the combining of the intellectual and the technical hands-on challenges of general surgery fascinating and adding the human and emotional aspects surrounding surgery make it deeply satisfying,” said Dr. Hanna.
Philosophy of Care
“I look at the whole person and do not just focus on a specific surgical problem,” he said. “I feel a holistic approach to surgical care is very important for maximizing successful outcomes, and I want to create relationships where my patients feel comfortable and confident with me and want to actively participate in their health care choices,” said Dr. Hanna.
Dr. Hanna sees performing surgery as an important responsibility. “I have a deep reverence for doing my very best for my patients,” he said. “I make sure that my patients have the most up-to-date information so they can make the right informed choice for themselves. I feel it is a privilege when a patient chooses me as their surgeon.”
Special Interests and Procedures
In addition to the standard general surgery procedures, Dr. Hanna has a special interest in breast and colon cancer care, thyroid and carotid surgeries, as well as endoscopic procedures. He has been practicing general surgery in the Alpena area for over 22 years.
He enjoys spending time with his wife, Belinda, and his three children, traveling, paddleboarding on the Great Lakes, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and keeping their border collie exercised.
