Biography
Neurologist Meihui Ma, M.D., was only 16 when he entered the university. “At such a young age, it was tough to decide what to do with my life. I scored well enough on my university entrance exams to go to medical school, so my father recommended I take that path. Since then, I’ve learned through my research and my interaction with patients that this is what I really love to do. So, I’m glad that I listened to my father.”
Educational Road Leads To A Career in Medicine
Dr. Ma received his Medical Degree from the Hunan Medical University in China. He later received a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. His research in Canada included studying AIDS and the brain, which first sparked his interest in neuroscience.
After receiving his Ph.D., Dr. Ma completed a fellowship in neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and a residency in neurology at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. As he began to have more patient contact, he realized he wanted to transition from an academic setting to practicing full time.
“I think there is a great advantage to having both an M.D. and Ph.D. background,” said Dr. Ma. “My research helps me understand what is happening with my patients, but my contact with patients puts my research in context and improves the value of what I learned.”
Family Located in Midland
After residency, Dr. Ma and his wife searched for a family-oriented community with excellent schools for their two daughters. Midland was ideal, and they soon became active members of the community. Dr. Ma enjoys spending time outdoors, fishing and playing tennis.
Dr. Ma welcomes patients to his practice. “I think my patients find me easy to talk with. I try to explain the most complicated situation in a way that is easy to understand.”
Dr. Ma practices with MyMichigan Health and his practice offers a full range of diagnostic testing as well as the full scope of neurological care.
