Biography
Kristalyn Mauch, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon with MyMichigan Health, and a member of the comprehensive musculoskeletal team in Alpena. She is fellowship trained in sports medicine.
As an orthopedic surgeon, she is dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries, disorders and diseases of the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves and tendons.
“When I was young, I had the unique opportunity to follow my mother, who was working as a surgical technician, into the operating room and watch her work alongside an orthopedic surgeon,” said Dr. Mauch. “Through this experience, I realized the immediate impact that the surgeon had on the patient’s life, and it was then I knew that I wanted to be part of that.”
Dr. Mauch has a special interest in treating athletes, as she was a varsity track and field athlete in college. After her residency, during which she trained at a Level 1 Trauma Center and learned how to address orthopedic trauma and musculoskeletal disorders, she went on to complete an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship. During her fellowship, she had the opportunity to assist in the care of professional and collegiate athletes, including those on the San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio FC, University of Texas San Antonio, Trinity University and the University of the Incarnate Ward.
Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy of care is to help treat the individual, not just the injury they have,” Dr. Mauch said. “By developing a relationship with my patients and understanding their desires, I can help customize a plan to help them reach their own health objectives. My ultimate goal is to help my patients back to doing the things they love, whether that’s running a marathon or planting a garden.”
Dr. Mauch hopes to develop meaningful relationships that can help her develop treatment plans that allow patients to reach their goals. She wants to help her patients maintain the level of work they desire while also preventing future injuries.
“The most satisfying aspect of my work is helping people of all ages,” she said. “I have the privilege to positively impact someone’s life, helping and working with them as they improve back to the level of activity that they desire.”
Special Interests and Procedures
In addition to injury prevention, Dr. Mauch has a special interest in working with athletes at any level of competition. She treats a wide range of orthopedic conditions, including sports-related injuries, arthroscopy of the shoulder or knee, shoulder stability surgery, rotator cuff surgery, ACL and multi ligament knee reconstruction, cartilage restoration procedures, joint replacements, and fracture care.
In her free time, Dr. Mauch enjoys track and field, basketball, kayaking, boating, traveling, reading and photography.
