Biography
Elvira M. O’Brien, M.D., specializes in obstetrics and gynecology.
“I have a special passion for OB/GYN work,” Dr. O’Brien said. “I love everything about the specialty, including the day-to-day care, preventive health care and obstetrics. I enjoy caring for all generations and treating the problems that are specific to women at different stages of their lives. I consider their total physical health as well as their emotional and psychological health. If I can’t help them, I will refer them to someone who can help.”
“Good health is the most precious thing we have,” Dr. O’Brien said. “When women come to me, they trust me to help them gain or maintain their health. It is a big responsibility and I find great satisfaction in helping them.”
Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy is to first build a relationship, then give advice,” Dr. O’Brien said. “I take a personal approach and get to know my patients as individuals. As we get to know each other, we build trust.”
Dr. O’Brien believes good rapport is essential for good health. “Mistakes can happen if patients don’t understand, so it is important that we have very clear communication. I can answer questions and explain things and can also provide other materials to help them understand.”
She said one of her primary responsibilities is to identify problems and discuss treatment options. “I give people choices because I think it is very important that patients participate in making decisions about their health.
At the same time, patients are responsible for making healthy choices and following advice,” Dr. O’Brien said.
Raised in Uzbekistan, Dr. O’Brien worked at a university hospital there until 2002 when she married and moved to the United States with her husband and daughter. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and other outdoor activities. After visiting Yellowstone National Park and Mt. Rushmore, she made it a personal goal to visit every national park in the country.
