Scholarships and Tuition Assistance Ensure Future Healthcare Workers

Healthcare is rapidly approaching the largest workforce crisis in history. MyMichigan Health is addressing this concern through an innovative initiative called Grow Our Own. This initiative provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships and tuition reimbursement to individuals who want to further their education for a career in health care.

Dr. David Rayfield Endowed Scholarship

Dr. David Rayfield’s was a Professor of Philosophy at Saginaw Valley State University from 1970 until his retirement in 2005. His family established this annual nursing student scholarship fund in 2021 in his memory and well as in appreciation to MyMichigan Home Care Nurse Cori Kehr. Their goal was to create a lasting legacy that overtime services will enhance the quality of bachelor prepared nurses for the MyMichigan Health’s service area. Dr. Peter Aliferis Memorial Scholarship

The Medical Center Laboratory staff established this fund as a tribute to Dr. Peter Aliferis, a Pathologist for 37 years. Dr. Aliferis passed away on March 13, 2002, and the scholarship fund is in memory of his many contributions to the hospital and community. Bailey Scholarship

The Bernard F. and Melissa Anne Bailey Family Fund is a student scholarship program administered by MyMichigan Health, funded through a gift from Bernard Bailey. Scholarships are given to students in health care fields on the basis of merit and established criteria as determined by an overseer committee. Bailey Fund details and application. Philip A. Harris Memorial Scholarship

The Philip A. Harris Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship created to support a third- or fourth-year medical school student (s) who is a first degree relative of a MyMichigan Health employee (active or retiree) at any one of the MyMichigan Health subsidiaries. The student could be attending any medical school in or outside of Michigan. Consideration will also be given to third- or fourth-year medical students who have completed multiple clerkships at a MyMichigan Health subsidiary. June & Gerald Kramer Memorial Education Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship has been made available by the Kramer family in memory of June & Gerald Kramer. Both June and Gerald spent many hours at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena brightening the lives of many with their smiles and laughter. Their philosophy was always to help others and keeping with that philosophy, this $1,000 scholarship was established. Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in the field of Nursing or direct patient care. Applicants must be a resident of Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency or Presque Isle counties. MyMichigan Medical Center Clare Volunteer Scholarship

This annual scholarship is awarded through the MyMichigan Medical Center Clare Volunteers. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize and encourage students to pursue education in health care and also in keeping the volunteer's philosophy to help others. Two students will be awarded a one-time only gift of $500 to assist in in their health care education journey at Mid Michigan College (MMC). MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin Volunteer Scholarship

This annual scholarship is awarded through the MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin Volunteers. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize and encourage students to pursue education in health care and also in keeping the volunteer's philosophy to help others. Three students will be awarded a one-time only gift of $1,500 to assist in in their health care education journey at a college or university in Michigan.

MyMichigan Medical Center Midland Volunteer Scholarship

This annual scholarship, of at least $2,000, is awarded through the Midland Area Community Foundation. The applicant must be a resident of Midland County, and be enrolled in a health care curriculum. The applicant must have completed the equivalent of at least one year in a post-secondary educational institution or have been accepted into a post graduate medical curriculum. The applicant must also possess a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applications are accepted between December 1 and February 15 each year. Thelma Orr Memorial Scholarship

Thelma Orr was a Nursing Director at Alpena General Hospital, now known as MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. Thelma Orr was recognized as founder of the Auxiliary at its inception in 1974. The Thelma Orr Memorial Scholarship is currently awarded through the MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena volunteers. The scholarship is in Thelma’s memory, as an expression of gratitude for Thelma’s efforts and dedication to the importance of volunteerism and passion for healthcare. Paul A. Poling Memorial Fund Scholarship

Paul A. Poling, a resident of West Branch and successful business owner was a long-time Board Trustee of MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch and donor to MyMichigan Health Foundation. His firm belief in education and desire to provide for future healthcare professionals for this region, led him to leave in his estate $500,000 to create the Paul A. Poling Memorial Fund Scholarship. Dr. George Schaiberger, Sr., Dr. Howard VanOosten and Dr. Lloyd Wiegerink Memorial Scholarship

The Medical staff at MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch established this memorial scholarship as a tribute to Dr. George Schaiberger, Sr.; Dr. Howard VanOosten; and Dr. Lloyd Wiegerink. All three physicians were pioneers of the early years of the Medical Center, and this scholarship was created in memory of the many selfless hours of exceptional medical care provided by these physicians who were and are venerated as pillars of the West Branch community. The fund will assist students attending or registered to attend higher institutions of education and employees of MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch pursuing their education in a medical career. Tolfree Scholarship

The Tolfree Scholarship Fund was created by the MyMichigan Health Foundation Board of Directors to further health care education in its service area to provide quality healthcare professionals for its citizens. Donor designated funds are disbursed annually from this scholarship. Applicant’s primary residence must be in the MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch service area. Tuition Reimbursement

MyMichigan Health encourages their employees to pursue career development opportunities that are related to their current position or another position within the health system. Tuition reimbursement provides financial assistance to those MyMichigan employees attending an accredited college or university in a degree program that will benefit the Medical Center.
