Volunteering Fueled Her Desire to Become a Nurse

Serving as a student volunteer at MyMichigan Medical Center Midland helped foster Amy Raetz-Benner’s desire to pursue a career in nursing.

“I also worked as a high school co-op in the Emergency Department, where I was able to participate in patient care and experience firsthand what it meant to be a nurse,” said Raetz-Benner. “This opportunity single-handedly confirmed that nursing was my passion.”

Raetz-Benner, from Midland, is currently enrolled at the University of Michigan-Flint in the Doctor of Nursing Practice-Adult-Gerontology Acute Care tract. When completed, she would like to treat and care for patients within the intensive care setting. A scholarship from The Bernard F. and Melissa Anne Bailey Family Fund is helping her achieve this goal.

“Receiving the Bailey scholarship has truly taken away some of the burden associated with pursuing a higher level of education,” said Raetz-Benner. “I am thankful for the opportunity to receive this scholarship and using it to make a difference in the lives of others.”

The Bernard F. and Melissa Anne Bailey Family Fund is an endowment fund given to MyMichigan Health to administer as a student scholarship program for those area individuals interested in pursuing professional schooling in a health-related profession.
