MyMichigan Health Nursing Student Orientation Information

Medication Administration

It is the responsibility of the student to be familiar with any medication that they will be administering.

Prior to medication administration:

  • All staff as well as students will perform the five rights prior to administration of any medication.
    • The right drug
    • The right dose
    • The right route
    • The right time
    • The right patient

Administration of any medication MUST NEVER be completed without direct observation and co-signature by licensed staff or your instructor.

Administering medications:

  • All medications must be labeled.
  • Always check the patient’s armband with their name and date of birth against the medication administration record.
  • Always utilize 2 patient identifiers, ask the patient to state their name and date of birth.
  • Open all medications at the bedside; NOT prior to entering the room.
  • Administer medication as scheduled, within 60 minutes of designated time.
  • No medications are allowed to be stored at the bedside. This includes inhalers unless there is a physician order to do so.

General Information

  • Most physicians make rounds in the morning. Make rounds with the physician for your patients as this is a great learning opportunity.
  • Patient identification must be an active process by asking the patient’s name and date of birth. (Note: Patients are never to be identified using room numbers.) If a patient does not have an armband, notify a staff person immediately so one can be obtained and placed on the patient.
  • Always keep the call light in reach. All patients must have their beds in the lowest position, brakes on, and bedside table within reach.
  • Always report off to your patient’s primary nurse regarding your patient’s condition when leaving the unit for any reason.
  • Baths should be offered each day and should include back care, hair care, oral care, shaving, and foot care. Hour of sleep (HS) care includes face, hands, axilla, pericare, oral care, and back care.
  • Gait belts are to be used when ambulating patients.
