  • 2022 | In April 2022, the new patient tower opened featuring private patient rooms, operating rooms, LDRP suites and more.
  • 2016 | Affiliated with MidMichigan Health and Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health System.) Completed $7.5 million Emergency Department renovation with 20 private rooms and significant upgrades to technology and medical equipment.
  • 2014 | First in Michigan to have a Samsung Fully-Automated Digital X-ray System.
  • 2007 | The Center for Wound Healing & Hyberbaric Medicine opened in partnership with NOAA Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
  • 2006 | The HealthPlex opened featuring state-of-the- art equipment, a warm-water aqua therapy pool, and fully integrated rehabilitation.
  • 2004 | The new Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit opened with 11 private rooms.
  • 2003 | Auxiliary donations to the Medical Center reached $1 million and the Auxiliary celebrated its 30th anniversary.
  • 2001 | The Cancer Center, in partnership with the University of Michigan Health System, opened.
  • 1995 | The Medical Center was one of only four hospitals in the state to launch a website.
  • 1993 | The Development Council, whose focus is developing widespread community and financial support for the hospital, was established with Dr. Robert Currier as chair.
  • 1987 | Alpena received its first CT scanner.
  • 1985 | Completed $20 million project with a 72-bed tower of patient rooms, doubling the size of the hospital.
  • 1974 | Completed a $3.4 million expansion project with a new lab, additional laundry area and the Emergency Room’s outpatient facilities.
  • 1962 | Added Chronic Disease and Rehabilitation Unit and Intensive Care Unit.
  • 1942 | Added a $1 million, three-story wing bringing the hospital capacity to 134 beds plus a new surgery facility, new entrance and physical therapy department.
  • 1940 | Hailed as the only modern hospital in northeast Michigan, Alpena General Hospital opened with 88-beds, two operating rooms, X-ray department, maternity unit with 11 bassinets, children’s ward, 11 private rooms and a pathology laboratory. It cost $258,181 and the first baby was born two days after opening.
